The padres who built the Carmel Mission in 1771 in Carmel, California, really had it together, with the help of the Indians living in the area. Some of the Native Americans didn't appreciate the padres, but today we can't match their endeavors. The mission is officially known as Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo.
